Happy memorial day!! Hope everyone out there had a great time celebrating! As for myself, I was unable to do any celebrating due to work. However I did get just enough time to complete the Murph WOD. Something I’ve done on Memorial Day and Fourth of July every year for the last three years. For those that don’t know, its a workout named after Michael Murphy, a veteran who died while serving in Afghanistan. It has become a popular way for those in the fitness community to honor those lost in the line of duty. The workout is as follows: 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, 1 mile run. Sounds simple, but complete it taking short breaks only when absolutely necessary and i promise your quads, glutes, and arms will be screaming at you!

Personally I think most Americans, myself included, don’t show enough appreciation anymore. Despite all the political turmoil going on nowadays, we can easily set our difference of opinions aside long enough to reflect on the fact that we live in a place where we are allowed to have those opinions. We forget that right now, in other places, people literally don’t have very basic human rights. Again, I’m not judging anyone or acting like I am better, because I’m not. But my point is, I really love how the fitness community comes together on memorial day to perform a workout in honor of those who sacrificed. Using that freedom to improve your health and take care of your body is an honorable way to show appreciation in my opinion. And I’m happy to participate.

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants” Thomas Jefferson once said. So for people like me who haven’t made that sacrifice, I encourage give Murph a shot. Spend your workout thinking about and being thankful for those who cannot. As long as you do that, and give it the workout hell, you’ve spent memorial day the right way! Then go crush some beers and bar-b-que!!
